ISL Update: Roy Krishna & Luis Machado take the headlines on a Super Sunday

Northeast United win the early Sunday kick-off with a wonderful brace by Luis Machado & another Deshorn Brown goal while the man of always Roy Krishna came up with yet another matchwinner for ATK Mohun Bagan to put them top of the Indian Super League table.

The Highlanders did look the better side as they dominated Odisha from the kick-off. It took Northeast United only 9 minutes to score the first goal of the game when Mehta’s excellent delivery from the right found Luis Machado who scored with a first-time volley from the edge of the box.

Gallego’s through ball to Brown gave Northeast United a 2-0 advantage in only the 19th minute of the match. Federico Gallego produced his second assist of the match when his ball over the top of Odisha’s defence was headed home by Luis Machado while the game had only lasted 25 minutes until then. Bradden Inman made it 3-1 just before half-time to bring Odisha FC back into the match.

Despite the best efforts of Odisha FC to add to their first-half goal and make a meal of this match, Northeast United will have their goalkeeper to thank to have kept them at bay. Arshdeep also saved a few Northeast United efforts, but it was Gurjinder Kumar’s Red Card in the second half that was probably the highlight moment of the second half as 10-men Northeast United hung onto an important 3-1 victory.

Luis Machado managed to score two goals but it was Federico Gallego who was given both the DHL Winning Pass of the Match as well as the Hero of the Match. Luis Machado didn’t get any awards, but his goals will be the most crucial talking points in this match and also will go a long way to define Northeast United’s season.

The late kick-off on Sunday saw ATK Mohun Bagan came up against a rather tame Jamshedpur FC who put on a disappointing performance after getting themselves back in the Top 4 race early on this week. Both teams had massive struggles in the final third with creativity being a constant problem for both sides.

Jamshedpur showed huge character defensively in the second half while the Marines forced the Jamshedpur goalkeeper TP Rehenesh to make a few saves in the half. Nerijus Valskis had Jamshedpur FC’s best chance of the game when he powerfully headed a precise cross from the left-wing but only for Arindam Bhattacharja do produce a world-class save.

David Williams produced a wonderful through-ball behind the Jamshedpur defence in the 85th minute for none other than Roy Krishna who is the most clinical player in the ISL right now. The finish from Roy Krishna was unerring and was enough for ATK Mohun Bagan to seal the deal and go top of the ISL table. David Williams was awarded the DHL Winning Pass of the Match while the Hero of the Match went yet again to Roy Krishna who has scored 4 goals in his last 3 matches.

Mumbai City FC play Bengaluru FC on Monday, 15th February 2021 with an aim to reclaim their top of the table spot which can only be the case if they were to beat Bengaluru. The match will be LIVE on Star Sports 2 and Hotstar at 7:30 pm IST. Stay Tuned!
