ISL Update: Jamshedpur FC beat Mumbai City FC 2-0 as woes continue for Sergio Lobera

Jamshedpur FC had a match of their dreams as second-half substitutes David Grande and Boris Singh scored in a 2-0 victory which realistically dented any Mumbai City FC hope of winning the ISL Shield and topping the Hero ISL 2020-21 season. The defeat keeps Sergio Lobera’s men 5 points below ATK Mohun Bagan while Jamshedpur FC moves to 6th in the ISL table.

Jamshedpur FC started the match as the better team and created a couple of early chances while Mumbai City FC were yet to get off the block and into the match. As the match settled, the Islanders took control of the ball possession while Jamshedpur sat back valiantly and played a good game on the transitions. Doungel & Farukh had a couple of chances around the 20th minute but both of them ended wide of Amrinder’s goal.

Isaac created a couple of wonderful heading opportunities for Jamshedpur FC striker Nerijus Valskis, but the Lithuanian striker failed to get on the end of one of those crosses by Isaac and headed the other one over the top of the Mumbai City FC goal. While Mumbai City FC failed to create any notable opportunities in the first half, the match was 0-0 at half-time.

Mumbai City FC did come out in the second half with more offensive intent, but there was no challenging the defensive resilience of this Jamshedpur FC setup. They were very well drilled in their defensive shape and while at it Farukh was effective on the counter but kept dragging his shot wide.

It was Jamshedpur FC who were rewarded for their persistence in the 72nd minute as an Aitor Monroy corner was met by Farukh and while it was saved by Amrinder, it landed kindly in the path of second-half substitute Boris Singh who tapped in the first goal of the match. Lobera’s men were visually frustrated as they trailed 1-0.

Mourtada Fall was a target on the offensive set-pieces for Mumbai City FC and while Cy Goddard did try to find him a couple of times on them, Fall couldn’t quite get any purpose to his headers. Farukh was let go of by Mumbai in January and the Jamshedpur FC forward almost made Mumbai pay but his shot was saved comfortably by Amrinder.

Jamshedpur FC managed to kill the game off in the final few minutes as Aitor Monroy’s through ball found David Grande who came up with an exquisite finish to not only win the match 2-0 but also to probably end Mumbai’s shield hopes. Bart Ogbeche came close to pulling one goal back in stoppage time but TP Rehenesh and co. managed to keep the Jamshedpur FC clean sheet to win the match 2-0.

Farukh Choudhary had an excellent performance against the club with whom he started this season and the Jamshedpur FC winger earned the Hero of the Match while Aitor Monroy was awarded the DHL Winning Pass of the Match. Stay Tuned to Star Sports 2 and Hotstar for the ISL doubleheader tomorrow!
