Suryakumar, Kishan & Tewatia get maiden call-ups as India announce the squad for England T20I’s

The BCCI announced the Indian Cricket Team squad for the upcoming T20I series against England at Motera next month. While Rishabh Pant and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are back in the squad, a much-anticipated call-up for Suryakumar Yadav finally materialized along with Ishan Kishan and Rahul Tewatia getting their first opportunity.

Jasprit Bumrah gets rested for the T20I series at the Motera along with Mohammed Shami. Varun Chakravarthy, T Natarajan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Rishabh Pant make it back into the setup while Manish Pandey still recovers from his injury and Sanju Samson is dropped. KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, and possibly Ishan Kishan will be a tough quartet to pick an opening pair out of. Rohit Sharma will be the obvious choice but the other opening spot could be up for grabs to anyone who chooses to impress.

Suryakumar Yadav has had a T20 strike rate of 140 while averages 31.5 from the middle order. Fellow Mumbai teammate Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar could be in a duel competition for that No.4 spot in the batting order. Rishabh Pant is back in form and along with Joe Root has probably been the most in-form player in 2021. It seems more obvious that Pant will be the keeper-batsman at No.5.

Hardik Pandya is a must-have at No.6 especially after his white-ball exploits in Australia and his consistent performances over the years in the Indian setup. Axar Patel, Washington Sundar & Rahul Tewatia could be fighting for that No.7 spot but Virat Kohli might just want to explore all three options during this series.

Yuzvendra Chahal had a good tour of Australia and a fantastic IPL before that as he will be a key attacking spinner for India especially considering the huge boundaries at Motera. Varun Chakravarthy could be another spinning option worth having a go at for Team India as his performances in the TNPL and the IPL have justified his selection in the squad.

T Natarajan had a dream tour of Australia after making a debut in all three formats of the game and continuing to impress down under after a fantastic IPL. Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s return is much cherished after a long time and India would want him to be fit for the upcoming IPL and then the T20 World Cup later in the year. Deepak Chahar has another opportunity to impress while Navdeep Saini and Shardul Thakur get another Indian team call-up.

Team India Possible XI for the First T20I vs England:

Rohit Sharma (VC), KL Rahul, Virat Kohli (C), Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (WK), Hardik Pandya, Washington Sundar, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Yuzvendra Chahal, T Natarajan.
