Vijay Hazare Trophy: Devdutt Padikkal smashes 152 while Uthappa’s century gives Kerala the win


The Karnataka sensation and opening batsman Devdutt Padikkal scored a magnificent 152 for his side against Odisha which included 14 fours and 5 sixes as Karnataka won the match by 101 runs. Robin Uthappa and Vishnu Vinod scored hundreds for Kerala who held their nerve to beat Railways by 7 runs after scoring 351 while batting first.

Karnataka batted first against Odisha as skipper Ravikumar Samarth and Devdutt Padikkal had an impressive 140 runs opening partnership in 27 overs. Samarth was out on 60 but Devdutt Padikkal kept playing in his positive style as he started to be aggressive after the second Karnataka wicket unleashing 14 fours and 5 sixes in total with some beautiful drives, cuts and flicks to take himself to 152. Karnataka scored 329/5 and thanks to 3 wickets each by Prasidh Krishna and Shreyas Gopal with the ball, they beat Odisha by 101 runs. Senapati and Ankit Yadav did score fifties but the other batsman for Odisha couldn’t capitalize.

Kerala had an excellent opening stand as they batted first against Railways in Bengaluru. Vishnu Vinod and Robin Uthappa put up a 193-run opening stand before Uthappa lost his wicket immediately after reaching his century. Vishnu Vinod also scored run-a-ball 107 but it was Sanju Samson who was the catalyst to the acceleration to the Kerala total as he scored 61 runs off just 29 balls with 6 fours and 4 sixes. Kerala ended up at 351/6. Mrunal Devdhar, Arindam Ghosh, Saurabh Singh & Harsh Tyagi scored half-centuries as a brave run-chase by Railways ended up falling short of the Kerala total by only 7 runs.

Het Patel scored 114 runs in 99 balls with 10 fours and 3 sixes along with an 83 from Dhruv Raval and 80 by Chirag Gandhi as Gujarat put up a massive 336/7 in their 50 overs. Rana Dutta picked up a 5-wicket haul for Tripura but was smashed for 74 runs in his 10 overs. Udiyan Bose was the only batsman who impressed for Tripura in the run-chase while Hardik Patel took 3/25 in his spell as Gujarat won the match comfortably by 132 runs in a dominating performance with bat & ball.

Vidarbha batted first against Jharkhand as Sanjay Raghunath & Akshay Wadkar scored 82 and 76 respectively to take the Vidarbha total to 288/9 in their 50 overs. Ishan Kishan was out for a golden duck but Kumar Deobrat stepped up to the plate when needed with a 100 off 103 balls and a 25-ball 48 by Rajandeep Singh and 21 runs off 11 balls by Bal Krishna took Jharkhand over the line with a six to win the match with 3 balls to spare.

Shivam Sharma had a dream spell of 10-0-31-7 for Uttar Pradesh against Bihar as UP later chased down Bihar’s total of 193 with ease after fifties from Priyam Garg, Akshdeep Nath & Upendra Yadav. Baroda scored 316/7 after batting first on the back of 131 from Kedar Devdhar and 55 from Krunal Pandya as Hyderabad could only manage to put up 206 in response.

Chattisgarh beat Goa by 8 wickets, Madhya Pradesh beat Tamil Nadu by 14 runs and Punjab beat Andhra by 7 wickets. Stay tuned to The Sports Doyen for the coverage of the 2021 Vijay Hazare Trophy!
