ISL Update: Fall, Ogbeche outclass ATK Mohun Bagan to guide Mumbai City FC claim the ACL spot

The final league game of the Hero ISL 2020-21 season saw the Sergio Lobera side claiming their top spot, which earned them the League Shield and helped them to qualify for the 2022 Asian Champions League. Mumbai City FC clinched the ISL League Shield.

The penultimate Sunday showdown at the Fatorda beheld a flurry of skirts, emotions, and drama. The last league day of Hero ISL 2021 season had the grueling fixture between the most consistent teams ATK Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City FC fighting for the top spot.

It is not over yet as Sergio Lobera does it again, but this time with the Islanders. Mumbai City FC has been the most consistent team in the Hero ISL 2020-21 season. They occupied the top spot for a majority of the time. But a collapse in the mid league stage saw ATK Mohun Bagan pipping the Islanders to claim the top spot.

It was not the case yet, Mumbai City had the last resort to reclaim their favorite spot, and they never compromised to give up. Thanks to Mourtada Fall’s header which gave them a constructive lead in the 7th minute of the game. But Habas’ side didn’t mean to be easy either.

ATK Mohun Bagan relentlessly gave threats, but Mumbai City’s defense didn’t let the latter gain their stakes. Jhinghan’s injury in the 20th minute gave the Mariners a huge blow. The Islanders doubled the lead in the 40th minute when Mumbai City was awarded a free-kick for a poor challenge by Pritam. The free-kick which was resplendently taken by Hernan had hit the crossbar, but the in-form striker Bart whipped the ball into the nets from the rebound.

ATK Mohun Bagan had a glossy chance to score in the 60th minute of the game, but Mumbai City’s custodian cleared off William’s strike from distance. As the game moved to the final minutes, the Islanders managed to kill the game, and took home the league shield.

Two shields in a row and the master Sergio didn’t seem to stop all the way. Lobera did the same with FC Goa, but the controversial sacking just helped  Lobera to find a better club in the form of Mumbai City FC. He did it, he just did it.

Curtains down, the league phase of the Hero ISL 2020-21 comes to an end with Mumbai City FC clinching the league shield, and it will be intriguing to watch clubs setting their feet in the much-awaited playoffs.

Sergio will now face off against his former club in the playoffs on the 5th of March and will be once again raring to seal a berth in the grand finale with the Islanders this time.
