Swiss Open 2021: Ashwini/Satwik upset the second seeds in the opening round, Sikki/Pranav crash out

The race to Tokyo intensifies as Yonex Swiss Open 2021 commenced with badminton resuming after a month-long break. The Asian leg was well organized, and filled with thrilling matches and records being made. Swiss Open is now the first tournament after the resumption of the tournament calendar due to the pandemic. Athletes will be putting their best feet forward to get those points for Tokyo Olympic Games and also to clinch a title.

Day one began with the round one matches of the Mixed Doubles category.

Ashwini/Satwik eased past second seeds

The mixed doubles duo of Ashwini Ponnappa and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy who are in fiery form kept up their game even after the month-long break. They beat the second seeds, a higher-ranked Gloria Widjaja and Hafiz Faizal of Indonesia in straight games. The pair had earlier met in the Asian leg where the Indian duo had beaten them in three thrilling games. This time however it was easier as they won, 21-18,21-10 in just 38 minutes. The first game was closely fought but the power-packed pair of Ashwini and Satwik completely dominated the second game.

In Round 2 they face Rinov Rivaldy and Pitha Mentari of Indonesia who is ranked 22, 3 places below the Indian pair.

Pranav/Sikki crash out

World number 32 Pranav Chopra and Sikki Reddy had a thought draw against the third seeds Marcus Ellis and Lauren Smith of England. They put up a fight in the first game before going down 21-18. The second game saw the English pair get more dominant as they wrapped the game in their favor 21-15. The efforts of the Indian duo did not suffice to overcome the attach and explosiveness of  Lauren and Marcus.

The first seed survive a scare

First seeds, Malaysian Olympic silver medalists Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying survived a scare from a young pair from Thailand. Nipitphon PHUANGPHUAPET and Benyapa Aimsaard lost the first set 21-15 but made a strong comeback in the second to down their opponents 21-15. It was a make-or-break decider for both. The third set was a very thrilling one going close with each not willing to give up. The resilience of the young Thail was commendable. However, the experienced Malaysian pair won the decider 21-19.
