Swiss Open 2021: Marin, Sindhu, Srikanth, Axelsen storm into second round, Saina, Kashyap Prannoy exit

Day two of Swiss Open 2021 had matches from the singles categories and the men’s and women’s doubles categories. The matches were nothing short of thrilling as we look at the results of the second day at St Jakobshalle, Basel. We had many interesting results on day 2 of Swiss Open with Sindhu, Marin, the first two seeds progressing, Axelsen and Srikanth winning, and many more.

Men’s Singles: Srikanth, Axelsen Advance to round 2

Viktor Axelsen, the first seed, who has been in spectacular form beat Jason Anthony of Canada, 21-17, 21-17 in straight sets at ease, to advance to Round 2.

In a battle of teammates, Kidambi Srikanth prevailed over Sameer Verma in three thrilling games. An in-form Sameer Verma fought hard, against his senior who is making a strong return to the top. Verma pulled off game 1 in his favor.

Verma looked impressive until 16-16 in the second game when tables turned and Srikanth rained down an array of shots to which Sameer had no answers. Srikanth won 21-18 in the second game. He absolutely dominated the third game storming off to the second game 18-21,21-18, 21-11.

Prannoy suffered defeat at the hands of Mark Caljouw of the Netherlands who is 5 ranks below the Indian.

Sourabh Verma beat Christian Kirchmayr of Switzerland in 43 minutes, 21-19, 21-18. Ajay Jayaram made a memorable comeback securing a won against Sitthikom Thammasin of Thailand 21-12, 21-13.

Lakshya Sen fell short in his game against Victor Svendsen of Denmark, losing 21-16,21-12.

Sai Praneeth hardly broke any sweat as he breezed past Misha Zilberman of Israel, 21-11, 21-14. H is currently the highest-ranked Indian on the race to Tokyo Rankings.

Parupalli Kashyap lost in the round 1 hurdle to Plablo Abian of Spain 21-15, 21-10.

 

Women’s Singles: Marin, Sindhu register victories at Swiss Open

Carolina Marin eased past in the first round beating Natalia Perminova of Russia 21-8, 21-10.

Second seed PV Sindhu also booked a victory in round 1 of the Swiss Open as she beat a Turkish Neslihan Yogit in straight games 21-16, 21-19.

Saina Nehwal suffered defeat at the hands of a Thai teenager Phittayaporn Chaiwan 21-16,17-21, 23-12.

Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand beat Kristin Kuuba 17-21, 21-18, 21-18.

Sung Ji Hyun[6] of Korea beat Qi Xuefei of France 21-7, 21-9

Line Kjaersfeldt of Denmark beat Laura Sarosi  21-15, 22-24, 21-19

Women’s Doubles

Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy dominated the German pair of Annabella Jaeger and Stine Kuspert 21-5 21-19.

In a major upset, Amalie Magelund and Freja Ravn got the better of the fourth seeds Lauren Smith and Chloe Birch of England 21-15, 21-18.

Men’s Doubles

All seeded players of this category won their respective matches and advance to Round 2.

Kim Astrup/Anders Rasmussen of Denmark defeated Goh Fei/Nur Izzuddin 20-22 21-13 21-13

Second seeds, Satwik/Chirag won their first-round match but fought really hard for over an hour to win against Christopher Grimley and Matthew Grimley 21-18, 19-21, 21-16.
