Swiss Open Semi-final 2021: PV Sindhu will face Carolina Marin in the final, Srikanth and Chirag-Satwik suffered defeat

Swiss Open 2021 semi-final round had matches from the Men’s singles and doubles, women’s singles, and doubles, and mixed doubles categories at St Jakobshalle, Basel. In the semi-final, India had 3 representatives.

 

Women’s Singles

Sindhu sailed into Swiss Open Final

Second seed PV Sindhu registered her straight games win against Danish Mia Blichfeldt with 22-20, 21-10 in the semi-final on Saturday.

At the beginning of the match, she had a tough fight, going further they equalized at 7-7. Post that Sindhu played a smash and took lead 16-11. After that Sindhu’s poor returns against Blichfeldt smashes got back the Dane level up 17-17. Sindhu came back but Blichfeldt gained an advantage of Sindhu’s error of judgments and made it 20-20. Sindhu finally won the game point with a cross smash at 22-20. 

In the next game she began with her attacking style and took the lead with 7-3, she continued till the break 11-6. Sindhu got an advantage from Blichfeldt’s wrong serve and faulty judgement along with her corner shot from the court, giving her a smooth win of 21-10.

After a 19-month long wait, PV Sindhu has reached a final of a tournament since her BWF World Championship victory. 

In the Swiss Open women’s singles, Sindhu will play against Carolina Marin on Sunday in the finals and indeed, we have the clash of the Rio 2016 Olympics badminton women’s singles final.

Men’s Singles 

Kidambi Srikanth loses to World No. 2 in semis

Indian single-player Srikanth has faced defeat from current world no.2 Viktor Axelsen from Denmark.

In the match, there was a rock-solid performance by Viktor, he has taken charge of the match with 7-1, further with his quick cross court smash Kidambi felt a short run. Post break Kidambi managed to get points as errors came from Viktor. Kidambi looked confident to equalize but Viktor played with strategy and claimed the game win with 21-13.

In the second game, Viktor has played long rallies to force errors from Kidambi. In this game, the longest rally consisted of 42 shots as they both showing never give up the attitude with 11-3.

After the break, Kidambi’s smashes on found the sidelines and a few drop shot errors from Viktor helped the Indian shuttler, made score level at 18-18, but eventually handed Axelsen a nervy win in game 2.

However, Srikanth’s playing shot has put him in trouble as his last two smashes landed just out and Viktor has claimed the game with 21-19.

Men’s Doubles

 

Chirag and Satwik’s Swiss journey ends

Indian men’s pair of Chirag and Satwik played against Denmark’s Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen in the Men’s doubles semi-final of Swiss Open 2021.

Initially, Chirag and Satwik had a slow start as opponents played well with the strategy of cross-court run. In the end, the Indian pair struggled, the Danish pair won the first game with 10-21.

Satwik-Chirag made a come back in the second game till the break. Post that the Danish played a quite intensive game to put pressure on the Indian duo and the Danish pair sealed the victory.  India had disappointment in men’s singles and doubles.
