The Knight Riders have been one of the more successful franchises in the history of the Indian Premier League. Gautam Gambhir inspired the Kolkata-based franchise to a couple of titles after which it has been a fairly rough ride for Dinesh Karthik & Eoin Morgan’s men. They finished 5th in the table last season due to a negative net run-rate although with Shakib, Harbhajan and Cutting, they did have a decent IPL 2021 Auction. Will this finally be the year that they are able to reach the same highs? Or will the Knight Riders succumb to the pressure again? Read our SWOT analysis to find out!

STRENGTHS

Batting has always been one of the positive things about the Knight Riders over the years. With Shubman Gill, Nitish Rana, Rahul Tripathi, Dinesh Karthik, and Karun Nair, KKR has the riches in terms of their batting options. Gill scored 440 runs at an average of 33 last season while Morgan also went past the 400-run mark. Rahul Tripathi or Karun Nair? Well, that question will be answered only after the first game, although KKR could ideally open with Gill and Tripathi with Rana, Morgan, and Karthik to follow.

Pat Cummins has been in top form with the ball in all formats off late for Australia and will be expected to continue his form. Prasidh Krishna proved his worth in the Indian team and he will be raring to go again this IPL for KKR. The return of Shakib Al Hasan as the spin all-rounder will be a massive boost.

WEAKNESS

Can Andre Russell do it again? That’s the question that Knight Riders fans ask themselves every year. The usual Mr. Consistent for KKR didn’t look in the greatest of form last season. The West Indian only managed to score 117 runs in 10 matches in IPL 2020, hitting only 9 sixes and an average of 13 with the bat. He took only 6 wickets with the ball at an economy of 9.72 r.p.o. Clearly, the over-dependency on Russell got KKR last season, and the same could be a potential weakness this season.

The lack of experienced Indian pacers has been an issue for KKR which has remained the same after the IPL 2021 Auction. With only Krishna being a capped Indian pacer along with the others like Mavi, Warrier, and Nagarkoti, the KKR setup might have a reason to worry. Also, the lack of replacements for the top-order batsman is a huge weakness in this squad. The confidence drain in one of their top spinners Kuldeep Yadav will also be a huge downside for KKR this IPL.

OPPORTUNITIES

We did mention a certain Prasidh Krishna before and the fact that he just had a successful ODI series with the Indian Team will give the pacer a massive opportunity to further increase his credentials with the Knight Riders this IPL. He took only 4 wickets in IPL 2020 at an average of 41 and an economy rate of 9.37 r.p.o.

Last year proved it over the piece that Nitish Rana and Shubman Gill could be the best possible options for KKR to open the batting. The duo will have a chance to be at the top on a more consistent basis this season which could be a much-needed opportunity for them individually as well as for the franchise.

THREATS

One of the biggest hypothetical threats for the Knight Riders like any other franchise is the effect of injuries. As we mentioned in the previous sections that KKR does not have quality backups for their batsman. Any unfortunate situation could see this thin squad stretched beyond their capabilities.

Lack of International cricket for most of the KKR starters in 2021 will be a major concern for the Kolkata-based franchise. With only Shubman Gill and Prasidh Krishna amongst the current crop along with Captain Morgan having any International action off-late, low match sharpness could potentially threaten their early charge.

The team does have matchwinners like Shubman Gill, Eoin Morgan, Shakib Al Hasan, and Pat Cummins but will the lack of depth hurt the Kolkata Knight Riders this season? Having said that, their young Indian players will be raring to prove a point this IPL 2021. Stay Tuned to The Sports Doyen for all the coverage of the Indian Premier League!
