Sunrisers Hyderabad SWOT Analysis for IPL 2021

The Orange Army was one of the franchises that retained a majority of their squad before the IPL Auction 2021. The addition of Kedar Jadhav and Mujeeb Ur Rahman along with J Suchith made the strong even stronger, perhaps the favorites for winning IPL 2021. SRH reached Qualifier 2 of the playoffs last season where they succumbed to the Delhi Capitals. The biggest question will still be – Kane Williamson or Jonny Bairstow? Will Marsh play ahead of Holder? Can Sunrisers now take the next step to reach the final? Read our SWOT Analysis to find out!

Rashid Khan! The name that strikes fear down the spine of any opposition batting lineup. Rashid has undoubtedly been the best T20 spinner around the globe in the last 2-3 years and his performances in IPL 2020 are worth his weight in gold. Rashid took 20 wickets at an average of 17.2 and an economy rate of 5.37 r.p.o. His combination with Mujeeb in the latter half of the season could be lethal for Sunrisers.

SRH has great depth in pace bowling all-rounders with Marsh, Holder, and Shankar. Bhuvneshwar Kumar returned to excellent form for Team India in the ODI’s against England and his return will be a much-needed boost for the Orange Army. Death bowling with Rashid, Bhuvi, and Natarajan is very effective for SRH, and with Warner at the top, they have the ability to make extremely quick starts. The depth in the middle order is commendable too.

The squad covers almost all bases but still might have a couple of potential weaknesses. Sandeep Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are similar bowlers meaning only one of them plays which will more likely be Bhuvi. In that case for Sunrisers, Thampi, Kaul or Khaleel might play the role of the 3rd seamer with all 3 of them having economy rates of 11.5, 16, and 9.4 r.p.o. respectively in IPL 2021.

Indian middle-order batsman Priyam Garg and Abdul Samad are yet very unproven at this level. The combination averaged around 18 with the bat last season whereas new signing Kedar Jadhav scored only 62 runs in his 8 opportunities last season. Finishing with the bat can be an issue for the Sunrisers.

Wriddhiman Saha was the savior for Sunrisers towards the penultimate matches of last season. He scored 214 runs in just 4 matches at an average of 71.33 and a strike rate of 139. Saha will have the opportunity of opening the batting this season with Warner regardless of Williamson or Bairstow playing which could solve both the wicketkeeping and the batsman issue for SRH.

T Natarajan has a chance to further build on his strong IPL 2020 season which saw him debut for India in all formats in the latter months. Natarajan took 16 wickets at an economy of 8.02 while bowling in the death too. Vijay Shankar had a poor season last year but can still compete for a spot in the middle order. With a squad good for all conditions, Sunrisers Hyderabad could look to finish in the top two spots.

With the 4 foreign players rule, the Sunrisers have a fantastic foreign core in their squad with Rashid and Warner being the first names on the teamsheet. It leaves Williamson, Holder, Bairstow, Mujeeb, Marsh, and Nabi to be chosen for the final two spots. Maintaining the spirit of those who don’t play will be a challenge and could potentially threaten cohesion in the camp. The problem of Bairstow or Williamson could be an issue either way and could leave the middle order confused in their style of play if consistent changes are made.

It is fair to say that Sunrisers Hyderabad has a squad that is good enough to win the IPL. Their strengths are multifold higher than any concerns they might have with players for all conditions. Under Warner’s strong leadership, the team can potentially finish top of the pile and maybe win the title too. Stay tuned to The Sports Doyen for the coverage of the Indian Premier League!
