Royal Challengers Bangalore SWOT Analysis for IPL 2021

Ee Sala Cup Namde – The clarion call for the Royal Challengers Bangalore has been quite demanding over the last few seasons but hasn’t yet been fulfilled. While Virat has promised to open the batting this season, Maxwell, ABD, and co have more responsibility in the middle order. Where does the problem lie? What can change in this RCB set up to maximize the output from these players? Read our SWOT Analysis on the Royal Challengers to find out!

Royal Challengers Bangalore has been massively dependant over the years on Virat Kohli and Ab De Villiers to get the runs. The rise of Devdutt Padikkal last season along with the signing of Glenn Maxwell adds much-needed depth. Daniel Christian, Daniel Sams, Washington Sundar, and Kyle Jamieson are a very formidable all-rounders union.

The first team definitely has enough runs in their belt. Will Padikkal, Kohli, and ABD be able to repeat this 450 runs season? RCB will certainly believe in that as well as the explosiveness of Maxwell & Christian/Sams in the death overs makes 200 very gettable for them against most opposition.

The lack of a clearly established World-class pacer in the team is very evident. The Royal Challengers will depend on Siraj, Saini, and Jamieson as pacers. While Jamieson is making his debut in the IPL, Siraj took only 11 wickets last season at an economy of 8.6 while Saini got 6 wickets at a bowling average of 63. Jamieson also has 4 wickets only in T20I’s so far at an economy rate of 9.8 r.p.o.

The lack of backups for the majority of their first-team players will be a massive reason for concern at RCB. While Kohli and ABD are irreplaceable for any player in the circuit, even Siraj and Saini do not have appropriate backups which is a huge negative factor for the side. Can this Royal Challengers side stay injury-free or can all players be at top of their game all season long? Hardly doubt that which makes it even more reason to worry!

Aaron Finch failed to give Padikkal the needed support at the top of the order last season but with Virat Kohli all set to open the batting for RCB this season, the tide might change for the good. Kohli and Padikkal can anchor and accelerate at the same time leaving the likes of Maxwell, ABD, Christian, and Sundar to play with more freedom.

Kyle Jamieson was bought for big money in the auctions but with his unproven worth in the shortest format of the game, the Royal Challengers will be hoping the gamble plays off for both sides. Will Jamieson and Maxwell live up to their price tag? It will definitely be on the agenda. Siraj was brilliant for India with the red ball and will be raring to go after a good International season.

Glenn Maxwell is a huge threat to the opposition bowlers but his consistent lack of output in the IPL over the last few years is worrying. He scored only 108 runs last season with a strike rate of 102 which is way below the expectations and the Royal Challengers will be hoping that has a massive improvement this season. In case it doesn’t, the pressure on ABD and Virat once again goes through the roof.

Chahal was RCB’s highest wicket-taker last season but his form in the recently concluded International series was concerning, to say the least. Also to add to that, Saini hasn’t been in the best of forms and also lacks match sharpness. Christian and Sams will also be rusty and over-dependence on Washington Sundar’s all-round abilities could be a problem.

Royal Challengers Bangalore certainly have all the firepower in their batting but the bowling department is a major concern for Virat Kohli’s men. The lack of squad depth will also have its say during the tournament. Making the Top 4 could be a tricky task for RCB but the fans will still be hoping for the cup.
