The South African opening bowling pair and the Indian opening batting pair will be key for DC. Prithvi Shaw has been in immaculate form domestically while Rishabh Pant has been key for India over the last couple of months. The signing of Steven Smith in the IPL Auctions further strengthens their middle order of Delhi. Stoinis, Hetmyer & Rahane will be key in the middle order for the Capitals.

While all the focus will be on Rabada and Nortje, Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma and Tom Curran could be a major boost for DC this season. The return of Amit Mishra along with the sensational Ravi Ashwin will be key for them in the middle overs. Under the tutelage of Ricky Ponting, this Delhi team covers all the bases needed for the IPL 2021 trophy.

The loss of their skipper Shreyas Iyer was a massive loss for the Delhi Capitals ahead of IPL 2021 which leaves the middle order in a bit of a jiffy. While Rahane is more than good to replace Iyer, but will he be able to bat at the same pace? It will be a reason of concern for DC as they haven’t announced a replacement for Iyer as of yet. If Steven Smith starts ahead of Ajinkya Rahane, it would disturb the blend of overseas starters.

While the spinners have a decent economy rate, the combination of Stoinis, Rabada, Nortje, Ishant, and Tushar went over 9 r.p.o. in IPL 2020 which could be a potential reason to worry. Apart from Rabada, all the other bowlers look susceptible in the death overs which could be the case for Delhi again in IPL 2021.

With Shreyas Iyer out of the IPL, Rishabh Pant gets a chance to take his performances to a higher level as the Delhi Capitals captain. The move could be a boon for the Capitals in the long run while the franchise will have one eye on player retentions and IPL Mega Auctions in 2022. With players like Dhawan, Smith, Rahane, and Ashwin to guide Pant, the Captaincy of the Indian wicketkeeper will be a massive opportunity for both parties.

Prithvi Shaw had a brilliant Vijay Hazare trophy with multiple hundreds and a quickfire style of batting. Shaw has a chance along with his opening batting partner Shikhar Dhawan to influence their team’s platform into the innings and then the Indian selectors. With Axar Patel out initially due to COVID-19, Lalit Yadav will be keen to set the stage on fire after a successful domestic season.

Axar Patel was Delhi Captials’ most economical bowler in IPL 2020 conceding just 6.41 r.p.o. while he also scored 117 runs with the bat with a strike rate of 138. With him missing the initial few games due to COVID-19, there is no like-for-like replacement for the Capitals which could be a concern.

Ajinkya Rahane batted at a strike rate of 105 in the last season and with him potentially replacing Shreyas Iyer, there could be a loss of impetus in the middle order which might add pressure on the likes of Pant, Stoinis, and Hetmyer. Prithvi Shaw showed vulnerability to the incoming delivery in the IPL 2020 and Indian tour and if that repeats, the opening slot could once again be a worry.

It is very evident that this Delhi Capitals side certainly has all the elements to win IPL 2021 despite the loss of Shreyas Iyer. While we are expecting a Pant-tastic season from the Capitals, it will be interesting to see a lot of the happenings around this franchise.
