Chennai is ready to host one of the blockbuster fixtures of IPL 2021 to kick off the season. While Chennai historically promises a spinning wicket, both MI & RCB are very well equipped to take advantage of the situation. Virat Kohli’s men have Washington Sundar and Yuzvendra Chahal & Rohit Sharma has to decide between Rahul Chahar, Piyush Chawla, and Jayant Yadav for his bowling lineup.

Daniel Sams and Devdutt Padikkal will be ruled out of the match for RCB due to COVID-19. Quinton De Kock’s availability is a doubt after his travel from South Africa into the MI bio-bubble while Kiran More also tested positive for COVID-19 in the MI camp. Kieron Pollard also came out of his mandatory quarantine only on Monday.

Azharuddeen and Kohli will be all set to open the batting for RCB. MI will partner either Lynn or Kishan with Rohit at the top. The MI lineup other than the top spot looks all set for this match. RCB will be forced into playing Dan Christian along with their top buy Kyle Jamieson and of course Glenn Maxwell and AB De Villiers as the other foreign players.

Winning the toss and restricting the opposition to a low total could be key on this Chennai pitch. While both MI & RCB have terrible opening day records, it would be a tricky game to watch. In the 27 matches before this one between the duo, MI has won 17 and RCB has won 10. While Suryakumar inspired a 5-wicket MI to win in the first H2H in IPL 2020, RCB won the second encounter in the super over.

Mumbai Indians (MI): Rohit Sharma (C), Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Kieron Pollard, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, James Neesham, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Trent Boult, Rahul Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB): Mohammed Azharuddeen, Virat Kohli (C), AB de Villiers, Glenn Maxwell, Rajat Patidar, Dan Christian, Washington Sundar, Kyle Jamieson, Navdeep Saini, Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal.

Suryakumar Yadav: The Mumbai Indians no.3 has been in superb form for his domestic side and the Indian Team in the T20 format. His inning of 79 in the first H2H last season was a knock of sheer brilliance and oozed of class all over the pitch. The inside-out shots over cover, the cuts, pulls, and punches off the backfoot were of the highest caliber. If MI is to chase down or post a total on this spinning Chennai wicket, Suryakumar’s good form against RCB will come to the fore for the defending champions. With his sheer boundary-hitting ability along with his gun fielding, he becomes a top captaincy pick.

Virat Kohli: The Indian and the RCB skipper announced ahead of IPL 2021 that he will be the opener for this season along with Padikkal/Azharuddeen. His 963 runs season is still fresh in the memory when you consider his new batting spot. Virat would be the anchor around whom the RCB hitters can have a proper go at the MI bowling lineup. His brilliance was once again on display in the T20 series vs England and Virat will be gunning for the same form again. He scored a low-key 466 runs in IPL 2020 but with the improved batting lineup around him promises Virat to be the anchor for 20 overs and pile on the runs. He will be a no-brainer in the possible captaincy picks.

The toss will have a fair impact on the result of the match. It would be slightly easier to chase in the second innings due to the dew factor in Chennai. Having said that, MI will be confident of putting up a massive total on the board if they bat first and are equally capable of knocking off the target set by RCB. Virat Kohli would rather want to chase a total after analyzing the pitch in the first innings with Maxwell, ABD, Christian, and Sundar all capable of being explosive in the run-chase. Mumbai Indians will start the game as slight favorites but RCB can very well come up with the clutch on an evenly balanced opening day in IPL 2021.
