#1. Woakes and Avesh wrap up the openers

With Rabada and Nortje missing from the Delhi Capitals lineup, all the responsibility fell on Chris Woakes to handle the new ball with Avesh Khan. The DC started with bowling a beautiful line and length which troubled the CSK openers Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Avesh started wonderfully and was rewarded for his top-class start as he took the wicket of du Plessis early on. Chris Woakes also ensured that they got rid of Gaikwad as he was starting the look good with the bat. Woakes got the young opener caught at slips and CSK was stumbling at 7-2 after 2.1 overs.

#2. Suresh Raina is back

The excitement surrounding the return of “Chinna Thala” was realized as Suresh Raina returned to competitive cricket with a bang. With CSK being in trouble as he walked out in the middle, like on numerous occasions before, Raina looked positive from the outset. Along side Moeen Ali, Chinna Thala looked solid off the spinners and picked his moments against the pacers as well. He hit some wonderful sixes off the spinners which gave us some brilliant throwback moments remenesent of his prime CSK days. He scored 54 off just 36 with 3 fours and 4 sixes but a unsual run out put an end to a brilliant innings by Suresh Raina.

#3. Sam Curran & Jadeja with the finishing act

The CSK innings needed impetus towards the end as the wickets of Raina and Rayudu threatened to derail the Yellow Army to around 160-165. Sam Curran totally took apart his brother in the Capitals setup for 22 runs of the 7 deliveries that Tom bowled to Sam. Jadeja also looked quite exquisite with 3 elegant boundaries to end with 26 off 17 balls. Sam Curran kept smashing until the final over as he ended on 34 off just 15 balls while CSK finished their innings at 188-7 at the end of their 20 overs. Woakes and Avesh were the shining light for Delhi Capitals with the ball.

#4. The Shaw – Dhawan Effect

The target was challenging even on a Wankhede pitch but the Delhi Capitals knew that they definitely had the batting to beat CSK tonight. Prithvi Shaw had been in remarkable form in the domestic circuit off late and likewise could be said of Shikhar Dhawan. With the pace and bounce on the wicket, it was likely that both batsmen who liked to play on the up would thrive off it. Shaw and Dhawan wasted no time from the very first over itself. While Dhawan was being the graceful and effortless presence, Shaw with his forceful thrashing of the white ball looked in absolute control.

Chahar, Curran, Thakur, and Moeen were taken to the cleaners by Shaw and Dhawan as the duo raced to very quickfire fifties. The Capitals opening pair put on a century partnership before Prithvi Shaw was dismissed for 72 runs off 38 balls with 9 fours and 3 sixes while Dhawan carried on for a little longer before Shardul took his wicket. Shikhar ended on 85 runs off 54 balls with 10 elegant boundaries and 2 sixes.

#5. DC wrap up the victory

Rishabh Pant and Marcus Stoinis completed the Delhi Capitals onslaught while newly-appointed skipper Rishabh hit the winning runs in style as DC beat CSK by 7 wickets. While the Capitals will take a lot of positives from their batting performances today, even Avesh and Woakes’ impressive bowling will also be cherished by last year’s finalists. CSK will have concerns over their bowling performance and probably even their opening combination, but Raina and Moeen along with Curran and Jadeja impressing with the bat will be a big positive for the Yellow Army.
