The Premier League season came to an end last week and while Liverpool did qualify for the UEFA Champions League for next season, they will be in Europe’s premier club competition without the services of Georginio Wijnaldum who announced his departure from Liverpool having run down his contract at the club.

Gini Wijnaldum was one of the most successful players of the Jurgen Klopp era making 237 appearances for them while scoring 22 goals and 15 assists from midfield. His work rate, positional cleverness, and ability to provide clutch moments made him a local favorite over the last 5 years at the club. Gini Wijnaldum scored twice in that famous comeback at Anfield against Barcelona while winning the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020 with the club. One of Jurgen Klopp’s favorite players will definitely be a massive miss among Liverpool fans next season.

As per the latest reports in the transfer market, Georginio Wijnaldum has agreed to a deal to sign for FC Barcelona in the summer. Wijnaldum will take a wage cut compared to his Liverpool contract and will sign for Barcelona until June 2024. While there have been consistent rumors about him to Barcelona for more than a year now, a transfer fee couldn’t be agreed between Liverpool and Barcelona the last couple of windows for Wijnaldum. The Dutch midfielder will finally complete the move to the Catalans after the expiry of his Liverpool contract.

The opportunity to work with fellow Dutchman and manager Ronald Koeman was one that tempted Wijnaldum to consider Barcelona over the other suitors that were in the market for him. His tenacity, skill, and experience would do that midfield a world of good next season as the Catalans will look to regain the La Liga title and make much more significant progress in the Champions League next season.

Along with Gini Wijnaldum, Barcelona has also reportedly agreed to a deal to sign Sergio Aguero on a free transfer as well along with Eric Garcia from Manchester City. Another Dutch player Memphis Depay is also understood to be close to agreeing on a deal with FC Barcelona to join with Wijnaldum in the summer. The transfer window might just prove to be decisive for the Catalans as after all these signings, whether Lionel Messi stays at the club is yet to be seen.
