The gold medal match was absolutely nerve-wracking. It was a match that could go either pair’s way. Going into the match, Zheng Siwei and Huang Ya Qiong were the favourites having been World Champions as well. The head to head record of 13-2 was of little relevance as their compatriots thwarted their chance at winning the only major title left for them to pick up. Huang And Zheng have been dominant in the circuit winning major titles like World Championships, All England and so on.

Arisa Higashino and Yuta Watanabe put up a brilliant performance against  Hong Kong China’s Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet 21-17, 23-21 to win the bronze medal. They became the first-ever mixed doubles medalists in badminton for Japan.

The Japanese put up solid defence and aggression in attack to thump their opponents and pressure them to make errors and weak returns.

“It was very tough. I felt really pressured, with many expectations on us. I tried to enjoy it but there was so much pressure that I wanted to go away. But I never gave up. It’s the first time Japan has won a bronze medal in mixed doubles so this is a big medal for us. We also want to go further, so please shout for us. Getting a bronze medal for Japan is very meaningful. I wanted to receive a better colour but it’s enough.” said Watanabe.

They put an end to a chance for a medal for Hong Kong’s pair of Tse and Tang who have had a dream run of becoming the first-ever pair to make it to the semi-final stage in mixed doubles in badminton.
