The Australian Open third day started with second-round matches. Today’s clashes featured famous players like Serena Williams, Dominic Thiem, Stan Wawrinka, and Bianca Andreescu.

SERENA SEES OFF STOJANOVIC

Serena William won a straight-set match against Nina Stojanovic with 6-3 6-0 in Rod Laver Arena.

Serena has reached the third round of the Australian Open for the 19th time on Wednesday.

Serena has served her masterstroke during the first set against the Serbian, 15 years her junior who was playing in her fourth Grand Slam.

“She pushed me really hard and played well throughout the match,” the 39-year-old said. “I wasn’t thinking so much in the second set.”

 

ANDREESCU’S COMEBACK

It was Bianca Andreescu’s comeback on-court after a 15-month break. After watching her game today we can definitely say that she has made a spectacular comeback with an amazing performance.

Bianca has defeated Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-Wei with a 6-3, 6-2 scoreline at Rod Laver Arena.

 

OSAKA MARCHES INTO THIRD ROUND

The Japanese origin American, Naomi Osaka, currently world number three entered into round three with consistent performance and confidence.

Osaka’s strong serve and overpowering performance helped to score 6-2, 6-3 against Caroline Garcia, a French player, while Garcia has not scored any breakpoint during the whole game.

 

HALEP SURVIVES HUGE SCARE TO ADVANCE

Romanian second seed Simona Halep won her 5th  consecutive games after coming back in from the brink to defeat local hope Ajla Tomljanovic 4-6 6-4 7-5 in an error-strewn match. With this Simona has made her spot in the third round.

 

DJOKOVIC PASSES TIAFOE TEST

Novak Djokovic’s match was incredible with wavered under the pressure of Frances Tiafoe but the Serbian fought back to claim a 6-3 6-7(3) 7-6(2) 6-3 win and reach the third round.

Initially, Frances had created pressure for Novak but from the beginning of 3rd set when the American grew frustrated by the service shot and a double fault on match point favoured Djokovic as he advanced to a third-round.

 

THIEM’S HEADING THROUGH IN MELBOURNE

The 27-year-old U.S. Open champion Dominic Thiem has maintained his winning match with 6-4, 6-0, 6-2 against Dominik Koepfer and secured his place in the third round.

 

WAWRINKA FALLS TO FEARLESS FUCSOVICS

Hungarian tennis  Marton Fucsovics won a thriller five-set match against Stan Wawrinka. The 2014 champion Wawrinka blew three match points in the fifth-set tiebreaker of his four-hour marathon match with Marton Fucsovics, who won 7-5, 6-1, 4-6, 2-6, 7-6(9).

 

BOPANNA’S EXIT FROM DOUBLES

For India, in men’s doubles, Rohan Bopanna and Ben McLachlan crashed out from the opening round, faced straight-set loss with  4-6, 6-7(0) from the Korean wild card pair of Ji Sung Nam and Min-Kyu.

Ankita Raina, an Indian top seed female tennis player has created history as she became the 3rd Indian woman tennis player to qualify for the main draw of a Grand Slam, Australian Open on Sunday.

Nirupama Vaidyanathan was the first tennis player to represent India at Grand Slam main draw, back in 1998, after that Sania Mirza, a six-time Grand Slam winner in the women’s doubles of tennis major had added her name. Now Ankita has made her impressive spot at a Grand Slam and making India proud.

After missing out on the women’s singles main draw, she still has an opportunity as a ‘Lucky Loser’ in the first round perhaps she got a direct entry in women’s doubles with Romanian tennis player Mihaela Buzarnecu.

“Regardless of the fact that it’s doubles, I will take it. I kept at it. I stayed in the process. Maybe next time, I will play singles too. Years of hard work, toil, and now I am there. Not only my hard work but blessings and support of countless people have brought me here, I can’t forget that It’s first, so special.” Ankita said to PTI moments after getting confirming her entry.

The conquering star said singles hold a different significance, making the doubles too special. “I know it doubles but India’s name will be there. These are the moments that spark something among people”. she added.

Ankita and Mihaela will play their first match of Australian open against the Australian wild card pair of Olivia Gadecki and Belinda Woolcock in the first round. Ankita has partnered up with Romanian tennis player Mihaela Buzarnecu, she is in the top 50 players draw.

India’s Fed Cup captain Vishal Uppal said this opportunity can give confidence to Ankita. Uppal told PTI,

“It’s good that she has got the opportunity to play with the best It will give her the belief that she belongs there. She is a very hard-working, industrious player. she won’t give up,” Uppal told PTI.

Now India will start the Australian Open 2021 campaign with Ankita Raina in Women’s Doubles along with Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan who will present their challenge in the men’s doubles with their respective partners. Sumit Nagal will participate in Men’s Singles draw.
